"All of us are being chased by a bear. The bear is the bad guy. What you don’t want to be is the last guy—because that’s who gets eaten."
— Wilfred G. Tan, CTO of Omnipay Inc & CEO of Bastion Inc.
Imagine you're being chased by a bear. It doesn’t matter how fast you are — only that you’re not the slowest. That was the memorable metaphor Mr. Tan used at the Makati Business Club's July 2 event, "Protect Your Data: Advanced Data Security in the Age of AI", and it perfectly captured the brutal reality of modern cyber security.
Why This Conversation Matters
In an era where technology drives 80%–100% of business operations—especially in the banking and fintech sectors—cyber-attacks are no longer a possibility. They are a certainty.
The event hosted by the Makati Business Club in partnership with IBM and Quantum Ambassador Umut Cikla, the event featured a distinguished panel that included Dr. Franz A. De Leon of DOST-ASTI and fintech leader Mr. Wilfred G. Tan.
When asked by Dr. Franz “We've seen a lot of Cyber security Incidents, attacking big conglomerate (Government Included), highlighting how vulnerable even large organizations, Actually it's happening every day, there's a lot of cyber-attacks happening every day, from your perspective, what can we learned from this incidents and what best practices can organization to adapt to improve cyber security resilience to avoid becoming the next headline?”
Mr. Tan didn’t mince words.
“I think it's a broad question but I want to answer that by a layered question, how much of your organization relies on tech today? 80%? 90%? In the banking sector, it’s 100%.”
“Sad to say there are bad people out there, that's the reality of the world and they will try to get it and they will try different methodologies to undermine you know circumvent”
“Attacks are inevitable. The question isn’t if, but when. What matters is: Are you prepared?”
He emphasized the importance of foundational cyber security practices—what he called
“Doing the baseline.”
In an industry where every process—customer interaction, transaction, risk assessment—is powered by digital infrastructure, the attack surface is wide open. And attackers are persistent, adaptive, and profit-driven.
The lesson? Cyber-attacks are not a question of “if,” but “when.”
KEY INSIGHT: Cyber security Is Survival of the Smartest
“All of us are being chased by a bear. The bear is the bad guy. What you don't want to be… is the last guy, because that’s who gets eaten."
That line drew attention and chuckles—but its meaning is serious.
In cyber security, resilience isn’t about perfection, it’s about staying ahead, even if just slightly, of the next potential target.
Mr. Tan urged organizations to do the basics well —Patch your systems. Lock your digital doors.
Mr. Tan urged organizations to do the basics well —Patch your systems. Lock your digital doors.
“Not all organizations are as fortunate as others. So I think as an industry as a whole you want to have a lowest common denominator.”
ON DATA PRIVACY: Quantum Threats, Real Consequences
As the conversation shifted to data privacy, Mr. Tan shared an inspiring view:
“Every time you log in or do an online transfer, you’re relying on cryptographic protections. But quantum technologies are threatening the very foundation of these safeguards.”
He emphasized that quantum computing changes the cyber security landscape—not in theory, but in practice. Neighboring countries are already harvesting data, preparing for a post-quantum world. The shift isn’t coming. It’s here.
But it’s not just doom and gloom.
Quantum also offers new forms of defense, like quantum key distribution, which can detect if anyone’s eavesdropping. Mr. Tan emphasized the importance of being quantum and cyber security-ready today, because you don’t want to be the next headline.
FINAL THOUGHTS: What Business Leaders Must Remember
Mr. Tan challenged leaders to shift their mindset:
“Why should businesses go back to this? Because a lot of businesses say, ‘Cybersecurity, medyo last ka sa budget kasi wala ka naman… you're a ghost… hindi ka income-generator.’ But that’s one of the numerous ways.”
"But if you look at the risk side, what is the value of tour enterprise if you lose data and that's go back to your data privacy. As a bank can you afford it? If once your data is breached and is out in the internet then what damage control and all of that cost."
He is happy to see leaders (especially those in the board room) across private, public, and government sectors, urging everyone to treat cyber security not just as an IT issue—but as a national, financial, and ethical priority.
FINAL THOUGHTS: What Business Leaders Must Remember
Cyber security doesn’t need to be perfect. But it needs to be proactive.
As Mr. Tan reminded us: It’s not about outrunning the bear. It’s about not being the slowest in the race.
